WPS PRESIDENT’S SAFARI 2026 from Tim Lever
The time is approaching for the 2026 edition of this popular event and this year it is my turn to provide the setting and the challenges.
MID-HANTS DAY ROVER
Dates:
- Weekday – Wednesday 1 July 2026
- Weekend – Saturday 4 July 2026
Location: towns, villages and countryside along the Mid-Hants Railway – suggested start is at Alton station café, with parking onsite – and there is a Waitrose next door for purchase of supplies.
Teams can then proceed “down” the line to (New) Alresford, optionally taking in Chawton, Cheriton, Northington, Ovington, Itchen Stoke and Itchen Abbas.
Basic Rules:
- Teams of four
- Maximum of one Gold member in each
- Photos to be taken in July 2026 – on either of the days listed above, or go back later in the month
- 11 categories – 10 x PDI and one print
- Each team member must submit at least 2 images in the final 11 submitted for judging
Other Things:
- Try and start together at the café listed
- Aim for lunch in Alresford – plenty of choices – or if it is a nice day, perhaps the Bush at Ovington
My Vision:
To encourage the broadest range of subject matter, I have prepared details of where it is possible to find suitable material for each category in the settlements listed above. I may also put out a list of those details, so that you can maximise photography and minimise searching. My categories emphasise multiple small opportunities, rather than large, obvious targets.
I hope this can also serve as an alternative travelogue for those unfamiliar with this fact-filled part of our county.

The 11 Categories
- Travel Poster (with text/slogan). The team must create a travel poster – with brief text and a slogan. This may be the work of >1 participant (in case some are less confident with the text side of things). It doesn’t have to be a railway poster, but hey, Alresford station will have some inspiration. A round for the creatives – can include collages and the wilder end of Photoshop filters.
- Keith Floyd et al. Food and drink in all its forms – from field to table – in this round try to see the wider scope – scapes, still-life, street and documentary, architectural
- In The Olden Days. There are a number of references to historic events home and overseas in the area – if you know where to look
- Dead Famous (possibly famously dead). Historical figures associated with the area – obvious, and not so obvious. For this round, try and make your shot evoke something about them and their source of fame, rather than just a shot of a blue plaque
- Edifices. Buildings – for those architectural photographers among you – churches, houses, pubs, farm buildings – from inside or out.
- Current Affairs (flowing water and its denizens). The western end of the area is in prime chalk stream territory, with crystal-clear water (not all of which flows in rivers and streams) – in this round, go with the flow – perhaps abstract/pattern, or nature.
- Country Types. For the people/street photographers among you – look for typical Hampshire rural folk going about their business. Earls and dukes, rich merchants, clerks, ruddy-faced farm folk, shopkeepers.
- View From (or of) a Bridge. Road, rail or foot – the area has its fair share of big, small, wide, narrow, tall and short crossings which make great focal points in scapes.
- Surplus To Requirements. A challenging round – this part of Hampshire is generally well-heeled and well-kept. See if you can find any abandoned items worthy of a shot – big or small.
- It’s the Little Things That Count. This round is one for those with an eye for detail – make of this what you want – but details are everywhere. For this round, the quirkier, the better.
- Set of Free (printed). Create a set of three images on anything you have seen on your safari – to be printed, but may be printed as a single print – other than that NO RULES.
Presidents Evening – 22 September

Best images from the Safari evening – judged by tbd
For the final Print round in previous safaris you had the option to submit one of the PDIs from an earlier round. That rule does not apply in 2026.
